One of our program goals is to bridge the gap between people across cultural barriers. CRS camper Vidita learned a powerful lesson that reflects the impact of creating a feeling of interconnectedness between people.
Our hope is that campers will carry forward the lessons they learn while they are here. Aiden realized that our process of growing takes time— it doesn’t just happen overnight. It is continuous, and like a seed that we plant, it is something we will continue to nurture.
Before attending Camp Rising Sun’s virtual program, Diyora wanted to find a way to help develop her confidence. She was looking forward to learn new skills and to have an outlet for her newfound interests in philosophy and economics.

These recent CRS alums, staff, and volunteers embody the values of leadership, excellence, and commitment to social justice across a variety of fields and disciplines. Hooman Yaghoobzadeh (CRS ‘87,’88) is a physician specialised in cardiovascular disease and internal medicine. As a CRS alumnus, he chairs the Health and Safety Committee and is part of the Reunion Committee. He will be celebrating his 30th CRS reunion this years. Chelsea Beyrand (CRS ‘07) just finished a graduate degree in nursing at Columbia University. Read their conversation about their careers, hopes for CRS and challenges as campers.
Caroline Chiu (CRS ‘10) has been the first woman to hold both the titles of President and Editor in Chief of the Columbia Daily Spectator, the second oldest continuously operating college news daily in the US. She is currently finishing her degree in Biomedical Engineering and will start working in consulting this summer. Shai Sklar (CRS ‘16) is going back to camp this summer as a second year camper and is passionate about biology and engineering. Read their conversation below!
AnnMarie Lee Walton (CRS ’92-’94,’99) is an award-winning nurse for her commitment to leadership and advocacy. After being a camper for 3 seasons, she went back to Camp as a counselor and continued her commitment to CRS through her service on the Program, Scholarship, and Health and Safety Committees. She also served on the Board of Directors and the Committee on Governance. AnnMarie was recently featured on the website of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, for her nursing work.
The Dutch alumni gathered during the National Day of Community Service, called NL Doet, which can be translated to ‘the Netherlands Acts’. The idea behind this day is to come together as alumni and to apply what they learned at Camp Rising Sun to their own country. Read about thier service day here.
Inna Kuvich ('01, '02, '06) interviewed Paula Souverijn-Eisenberg(CRS ‘95, ‘96, ‘98). Currently, Paula is the Administrative Officer of the Hague Branch of the United Nations Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT). Inna chatted with her about the work of the UN, the impact CRS has had in her life and her work at the Board of Directors.
