About the Honoree:

Mrs. Elizabeth “Libby” Scarborough Mascia has dedicated herself to securing educational opportunities for all children and is committed to sharing with others her firm conviction that everyone is a person of value.

Libby was born in Florence, South Carolina and studied at Furman University and later Columbia University. In New York she met and married Dr. Armond Vincent Mascia. At LAJF, we were first introduced to Libby by her husband, “Mandy,” a CRS alumnus.  Even before they married, Mandy brought her up to Rhinebeck to see the place that meant so much to him.  Although Libby was initially a visitor at CRS, she instantly became a member of the CRS family and went on to spend five summers at Rising Sun.  In fact, during the very difficult years of World War II, she worked tirelessly to support Camp and even spent one long summer cooking for the boys.  Later, she and Mandy were especially happy to see young women join the CRS family.

For decades Libby has been an active supporter of numerous charities and philanthropic endeavors in her community.  Most notably, she was the Founding President of the Day Care Center of the Tarrytowns in 1967, later renamed The Elizabeth Mascia Child Care Center in her honor.  This Center, an essential part of the community, provides inclusive, accessible, community-based, quality child care and early childhood education.  Libby is also a founder of Abbott House, an organization and school for abused, neglected and abandoned children and their families.  Her involvement with Abbott House began in 1963 and continues today.

Libby has also been very active in many civic associations.  In the mid 1960s she served as a member of the Citizens Committee for the Family Court that led to the establishment of the Family Court System in Westchester County.  A few of the numerous community-based organizations that she has been active in are the Phelps Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Tarrytown Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Westchester Association for Retarded Citizens, the Westchester Medical Center Auxiliary, local Scouting troops, and the Hudson River Patriots Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.  She was also a Co-Chair of the Tarrytown Centennial Committee and in 1981 the Sleepy Hollow Chamber of Commerce named her and Mandy the “Couple of the Year.”

She and Mandy were married for 45 years until his death in 1990.  Together the couple raised five daughters, two sons, a nephew and welcomed many friends into their extended family.  Libby’s children, their spouses, eight grandchildren and now one great-granddaughter are a constant source of joy in her life.
